The town of Selby has a population of 25,000 and as such is the major town within the Selby District which has a total population of 83,000. Selby town is four times as big as the next biggest setlement which is Sherburn in Elmet with a population of 6,500.

There are some lovely gardens in Selby and the surrounding villages with much of the area consisting of sandy and loamy soils which are very acidic, extremely workable and free draining. Great if you are digging it but sandy soil has several drawbacks being it's inability to hold on to moisture, nutrients and organic matter. Sandy soil is often acidic in nature and contrary to popular belief is easily compacted especially with hard pans developing below cultivation depth. The Selby area is very low lying and therefore the water table can be very close to the surface. Combine this with the risk of flooding from the River Ouse and problems can occur for both gardeners and farmers.

Due to the acidic nature of the soils in the area ericaceous plants such as Heather, Rhododendron, Azalea, Magnolia, Pieris, Camellia and Hydrangea usually do very well, much to the annoyance of gardeners in other areas who have alkaline soil. These plants are some of the most attractive available, often with vibrantly coloured young leaves and showy flowers. It's good to be a gardener in Selby!
